Learning Target: I have learned the history behind the IXL learning program and how it came to be.
IXL Math (and Language Arts too!):
IXL Learning was founded in 1998 when it was released as Quia Web, the first website that allowed teachers and learners create and share customized study materials. The first version featured three formats: a matching game, a concentration game, and flash cards. Soon after, quizzes were added, along with a dozen more games types. The concept was an overnight success, an Quia Web quickly became on of the most poular education sites in the early days of the internet.
Their mission then became to develop educational technologies that people can't live without- if only they existed: Their second product was Quia Books, a highly interactive online textbook and workbook platform created specifically for language learning. this released in 2001, a time when e-books weren't much more than PDF readers, Quia Books supported immersive, online workbook exercises with real-time feedback an an intelligent grading system. Combining the best of computer learning and traditional classroom instruction, Quia Books allows publishers to mix and match closed- ended, computer -scorable questions with open-ended questions that are gradable by students' actual instructors. Today more than 450 secondary and higher education language textbooks have been published on the Quia Books platform.
In 2007, their attention turned toward Math, when they introduced IXL, a groundbreaking platform and curriculum for K-12 math education. IXL is the world's most comprehensive math practice program, it covers more than 3,500 distinct math topics in a progression from pre-kindergarten to high school. All questions even word problems are alogrithmically generated, meaning every question is unique, and students never see repeats no matter how long they practice. For teachers, IXL provides insight into student performance through business -caliber reports and data analysis tools.
In 2013, IXL expanded to include English Language Arts, offering unlimited, targeted practice of grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. In 2015, two new subjects, science and social studies were added. this provides expertly crafted content to challenge students to think critically, evaluate primary sources, and engage their innate curiosity.
IXL is now used by 1 in every 10 U.S. school children and by 200,000 teachers, as well as at home by families worldwide.
Possible Uses in the classroom:
IXL can be used with any grade and it is an excellent resource to use to review or reinforce materials that have been taught in class. It is a great practice tool. Teachers can also monitor a student's progress with this program.
It can also be used to review what is taught in the regular classroom during a technology class.
Uses for diverse learners:
This is a great tool for students who do well on computer generated activities where they can view problems whether in math or grammar.
This is also a good program to use for students who are struggling and need additional practice to help master a skill that has already been taught in class.
